Peter Blamey is an internationally acclaimed hearing scientist, the co-inventor of 25 patent families, and part of the team that developed the cochlear implant – the revolutionary electronic device that has given hearing back to 500,000 people around the world. During a 25-year career at the University of Melbourne and the Bionics Institute, Peter supervised 20 PhD students, grew and managed a small research team, and published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers on hearing, speech and auditory signal processing.

His most successful start-up, Blamey & Saunders Hearing, pioneered the online sale of self-fitting hearing aids, in a unique ‘blended’ model that was purchased for global marketing by Sonova in 2019. Peter has won numerous awards for his life-changing work, including the International Award from the American Academy of Audiology and a Clunies Ross Medal from the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering.
